aren't you supposed to lift the drive wheels off the ground when towing a car? in this case it would be the rear wheels. would direct towing mess up the differential?

Usually flat towing is bad for modern automatics because the fluid doesn't circulate in the trans properly unless the engine is running. When you flat tow an auto, you're spinning the output gears of the trans. It's not being properly cooled due to the lack of fluid flow, so you end up burning them up. RV'ers sometimes fit an automatic with a pump that will circulate fluid while the car is being towed so they can still have their auto and not need to use a dolly or trailer.
Old manuals are a lot less sensitive. They also could have removed the drive shaft for good measure, but I don't think you need to do that on that vette.

Trailers win. I like Ramp trucks, but they are less good. Today's trucks are more powerful and can haul both a car on a trailer and gear, something a ramp truck is pretty poor at. Plus you can take the trailer off and then you have flexible normal truck.
